Enabling Encryption in Mac OSX

If you are running Mac OS X , this is how you can enable encryption.

First, open "System Preferences" in the Apple menu at the top-right corner of the screen.

System Preferences

Then, select "Security" to access FileVault encryption settings.

First, if you've never set a Master Password for your computer, click "Set Master Password."  As the instructions note, this password will allow you to access your files if you forget your account password.  Be aware that if you lose your account password and your Master Password, your data will be lost.

Then click "Turn On FileVault" to encrypt your home directory.  When the process completes, anything stored in your user's home directory (such as the folders Desktop, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, etc.) will only be accessible to you.

While you're here, it's a good idea to set these additional security settings, if you haven't already:

  • check "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver"
  • check "Disable automatic login
  • check "Log out after __ minutes of inactivity" and set the duration to 10 minutes
