Using Outlook Off-Campus
If you live or travel to an off-campus location that is not located on the UMaine System Network, you'll discover sending mail through Outlook only partially works. You may find you can send to '@maine.edu' addresses without issue, but receive a relay error when trying to send to anyone not '@maine.edu'.
Call your internet provider's tech support and ask for the Outgoing/SMTP mail server name*. You may also try visiting your internet provider's website and locating the section on e-mail setup for the Outgoing/SMTP mail server name*. Once you get the information write it down you will want it handy.
We will be using AOL as an example of an ISP (Internet Service Provider) for this scenario.
*The Outgoing/SMTP server name will be different depending on your ISP.
Common Outgoing Server Names
We've listed some of the more common outgoing mail servers for local Internet Providers below.
AOL: smtp.aol.com
Verizon: outgoing.verizon.net
Earthlink: mail.earthlink.net
MSN: smtp.email.msn.com
GWI: smtp.gwi.net
TDS: smtp.tds.net

- You should now be back at the Inbox or Outlook Today view. Hit Send/Receive.
- You will now be able to send and reply to emails while off campus.
- When you are back on campus you will need to follow steps 1-6, changing the Outgoing/SMTP server name back to mail.maine.edu.
