Configure Outlook and Entourage to Authenticate When Sending Email

By: UMF Computer Center

Date: October 11, 2007

Note: Do not follow these directions outside regular business hours or when you are off campus because some versions of Outlook may fail and need a patch. If that happens to you, you will probably not be able to send email until you can get assistance from the Help Desk ext. 7300.

Why should I do this?

If you use Microsoft Outlook or Entourage, this will prevent your mail from being labeled as {SPAM?} and it will allow you to use the University of Maine System (UMS) mail servers when sending mail from home to people outside the UMS. As a side effect this will encrypt your mail as it moves from your computer to the UMS mail server—particularly important when you have a wireless connection.

How can I do this?

If you are using Entourage, choose: Directions for Entourage 2004

If you are using Outlook, you must find out what version of Outlook you are using. Open Outlook. Choose “Help” in the menu line, then “About Microsoft Office Outlook” to open a window that shows details of the Outlook version you are using. The first line shows what directions you should use. If you find you have Outlook 2002 version 10.2627... please call the Help Desk ext. 7300 to schedule an appointment to have your computer updated to MS Office Service Pack 3.
