Making Older Versions of Office Work with Office 2007

Windows Users

Are you seeing more and more files that have, .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx extensions? These are files that have been created by the newest version of Microsoft Office, Office 2007.  In order for you to be able to open or amend these files with earlier versions of Office, you will need to download an Office compatability patch that has been put out by Microsoft.

Before installing the patch Microsoft advises that you install all Office updates BEFORE installing the patch*. This link provides instructions for installing the update as well as the compatibility patch. Please read the instructions before updating and installing patch.

Instructions from the above link:

To install this download:

  1. Ensure your system is up to date by installing all High-Priority/Required updates on Microsoft Update (required for Microsoft Office XP and 2003 users).
  2. After installing all High-Priority/Required updates, download the Compatibility Pack by clicking the Download button and saving the file to your hard disk.
  3. Double-click the FileFormatConverters.exe program file on your hard disk to start the setup program.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

To remove this download:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Select Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system and then click Remove or Add/Remove. If a dialog box appears, follow the instructions to remove the program.
  4. Click Yes or OK to confirm that you want to remove the program.

*  This patch will work with Word, Excel and Power Point but not with Access. For advanced users of Microsoft Office you will want to upgrade your current office package.  Faculty and staff can uprade their versions of Office for $59 (please contact the Help Desk X7300 for details.)

MAC OS

Currently there is no official compatibility patch to make Office 2007compatible with earlier versions of Office for MAC .  Until one is available you will want to save your file as a PDF or .rtf.
