Normally Symantec Antivirus keeps tabs on your system, watching for viruses, without your intervention. Occasionally, you may need to do a manual, full-system scan in order to catch a virus that may have slipped through or disabled Symantec Antivirus.

Full System Scans are easy to do, though they can be time consuming. Depending on the speed of your machine and the number of files you have, a scan can take up to 60 minutes.

Starting a Full System Scan:

1. From the Start menu, select “All Programs” and locate the “Symantec Client Security” folder.
2. Click on Symantec AntiVirus to open the program.
3. On the left, click on Scan Computer
4. On the right, all of your disks will be listed. Click the checkbox next to your any drive labeled “Local Disk.” Usually this will just be the C Drive.
5. Click the Scan button on the bottom left to start the Scan.

Now’s a good time to grab a cup of coffee or take a walk. The scan will take a few minutes and will deliver a report upon completion.

If you still suspect your computer is infected, you may contact the Computer Center. We can only service machines owned by the University or machines purchased through the EXCEL Laptop program.
